Summer and Travel
As the weather improves we tend to do more socialising both indoors and outdoors, and for some this may involve a few alcoholic drinks. July 7th to 13th was Alcohol Awareness Week and the theme this year is awareness of how much alcohol you are drinking on a regular basis. The recommended alcohol intake is 14 units or less per week, preferably with several alcohol-free days. It can be difficult to judge how many units of alcohol you are consuming if you are drinking at home or at a friend’s as the alcohol may not be measured. Alcohol can have a significant effect on your blood sugar and can cause hypoglycaemia (often overnight after an evening of drinking). We have more information about the relationship between alcohol and your blood sugar at the following link:

With the school summer holidays now in progress, many people will be travelling on holiday. Having diabetes means that you must be well prepared for a trip away from home, taking extra supplies of your medication and blood sugar monitoring kit. You also need to be aware of the effects of sunshine and heat on your blood sugar and know what to do if you become ill on holiday. We have lots of information about going away on holiday from checklists of equipment to take, to managing your insulin in different time zones. We have a table showing which sensors and insulin pumps. are safe to go through various airport security machines but please check when you are at airport security as the regulations vary at different airports. My Diabetes My Way contains a link to Fitbit (www.fitbit.com) that allows you to add your activity tracker data to My Diabetes My Way. If you have a Fitbit device, log in to My Diabetes My Way and select “My Services”. You can then link your Fitbit account and connect your Fitbit records. When you do this, you will see a new section named “My Activity” where you can monitor your steps, heart rate and many other Fitbit measurements.

Even if you don't own a Fitbit device, you can still track your activity for free by downloading the Fitbit app on your smartphone and using Fitbit’s MobileTrack function. MobileTrack lets you use the Fitbit app without a Fitbit device by using your phone's sensors to track basic activity data including steps, distance, and calories burned. Shortage of Some Insulin Supplies
Some patients have been experiencing a shortage of certain insulin supplies. In the last few weeks, this has particularly been amongst patients using NovoRapid PumpCart cartridges in YpsoPump insulin pumps. Diabetes UK has summarised these shortages in the article below:
