My Diabetes My Way: March 2021 Update

Welcome to the My Diabetes My Way Newsletter for March 2021.

New Scottish Diabetes Improvement PlanThe Scottish Government has recently published the new Scottish Diabetes Improvement Plan. This strategy document sets our Scotland’s priority objectives for diabetes care in Scotland until 2026. My Diabetes My Way is a key component of this strategy, particularly under the priority area of “Equity of Access”. You can read the full document here:

Diabetes and Ramadan
Ramadan 2021 will begin on Monday 12th April and ends on Tuesday 11th May. If you intend to fast during the month of Ramadan and you use insulin or tablets for diabetes treatment, it is advised you seek advice from your health care team due to the long hours of daylight in summer months.  Some useful information to help prevent hypo (low) or hyper (high) glycaemia (glucose in the blood) is available via the links below.

Service Updates
Next month, we will announce some updates to My Diabetes My Way. The first update is a change to the main area of the website. This is where you can access information and education materials covering all aspects of diabetes: https://mydiabetesmyway.scot.nhs.uk/Resources.aspx

We are changing the underlying database which will make it easier for us to add new content to the website and generally keep information up-to-date. The website will look slightly different following this update, but we have tried to keep the layout similar so that it is easy to find the content you are used to.

The second update is to our mobile app. Following your feedback, we are making changes to the way in which you log in to access your data. This should make the login process much more straightforward and once logged in you will not need to log in again unless you choose to log out. We will explain more about these changes in our next newsletter.

Join Up Your Fitbit Data
My Diabetes My Way contains a link to Fitbit (www.fitbit.com) that allows you to add your activity tracker data to My Diabetes My Way. If you have a Fitbit device, log in to My Diabetes My Way and select “My Services”. You can then link your Fitbit account and connect your Fitbit records. When you do this, you will see a new section named “My Activity” where you can monitor your steps, heart rate and many other Fitbit measurements.

Even if you don't own a Fitbit device, you can still track your activity for free by downloading the Fitbit app on your smartphone and using Fitbit’s MobileTrack function. MobileTrack lets you use the Fitbit app without a Fitbit device by using your phone's sensors to track basic activity data including steps, distance, and calories burned. More information on MobileTrack can be found here: https://help.fitbit.com/articles/en_US/Help_article/1875

We are currently looking at options to link other wearable devices (Garmin and Strava) and we would be happy to hear from you if you have any further suggestions!

My Diabetes My Way Admin
Due to the current situation with Coronavirus, it is taking us longer to collect mail, create new enrolment packs and send out registration paperwork for you to access your diabetes records. We are currently processing enrolment packs in batches every two weeks, but we are now happy for you to email us back a photo or scanned copy of your signed form to avoid any further delays.

If you have not yet managed to gain access to your diabetes records on My Diabetes My Way, or would like an update on the status of your registration, please let us know. You can contact us regarding any problems or request further help and support by emailing: mydiabetes.myway@nhs.scot
